What you want to do, rather than what you can do
Five years as a buyer allowed me to develop specialized procurement and purchasing skills. But I made up my mind to quit the company and become an international development consultant.
I first thought that consulting experience would be required and sought consulting firms to join. Many consulting firms recognized my professional experience in managing multinational teams and developing procurement strategies across countries and companies.
But at the Skylight interview, the hiring manager asked me, "What do you want to do with your life?” The question surprised me, because it was the first time that I had been asked about my own GOALS. Usually I am asked what I accomplished at my previous company, what I can do, and why I am changing jobs.
I remember that I took time to think before answering the question.
During onboarding training at Skylight, I was surprised that principals and senior managers were the instructors for only three new recruits. Even during the training I could see that Skylight valued our personal GOALS.
Pursuing my desired career at Skylight
After being assigned to a project, I have seen our senior consultants gain a client’s trust by working side by side with them, balancing specialized areas and the areas they are interested in.
Working with these inspiring senior consultants made me want to pursue a career at this company.
Skylight is always the clients' first follower. We are encouraged to take on new challenges and risks, such as starting a business. I am currently running a business as the Managing Director of a subsidiary of Skylight in Kenya. With a lot of support internally and externally since 2019, I moved to Kenya in September 2021 to commit myself to this business. Though there is no single easy matter here, rather a lot of struggles, I am trying my very best to make this business grow for those people who support me as well as our customers.
